Chia Coin Crypto Mining: Try Chia with 16 TB Sabrent SSDs

introduction

I avoided writing about cryptocurrency mining articles, but I had to check out Chia cryptocurrency mining when it hit my radar a few months ago. After really immersing myself in Ethereum mining a few years ago and still paying the electricity bill many years later, mining with my SSD sounded like fun.

Sabrent got in touch and pretty much packed 4 x 4 TB Rocket NVMe PCIe 3.0 M.2 SSDs and an ASUS Hyper M.2 X16 Card V2 that supports the 4 x NVMe M.2 SSDs. In total, I have 16TB of super-fast PCIe 3.0-based NVMe SSD storage to play around with - it feels so utterly overwhelming to have 16TB of flash storage in my computer, but I love it.

It continues with its use for the best cause - for mining chia crypto coins. At first I was so very hesitant, I wanted to do an article for Sabrent, but then using the SSDs for chia coin mining feels like hardware abuse. It's different than having your GPU working 24/7 for crypto mining because you can do it for weeks, months, years and it won't damage your product as a whole.

Not in the way that it stopped working ... yeah, the fans might not be that great anymore ... maybe you need to dust it off and even take the entire radiator off and clean it. But - it should work. Your GPU will still work after months or years of crypto mining abuse, but chia coin mining is very, very different.

It will kill your SSD.

When I went into this article, I was hesitant - but in the end I did it. I think the technology gods told me not to do it since I had so many headaches when I went into this article it wasn't funny. I've been so busy it's indescribable, I've spent 15 hour days benching and writing and everything in between for multiple launches from AMD and NVIDIA with the Radeon RX 6800, GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, and RTX 3080 Ti graphics made cards.

As soon as I got the chia coin crypto mining up and running, my AMD Threadripper system started playing after problems arose on my system that shortened this article. I didn't want to try another couple of weeks so I thought I'd just write an article about my previous experience with chia coin mining.

Set up your PC

If you're using a handful of super fast SSDs and you need the PCIe RAID card I'm using here, you need to make sure you have the right motherboard. I have to go into the BIOS and change some settings.

The largest is the PCIe bifurcation, with which you can convert one of your PCIe x.0 x16 lanes into several x4 to accommodate 4 x SSDs on the PCIe lanes - 16 lanes in total with 4 drives = 4 PCIe 3.0 lanes each (x4x4x4x4). This is specific to certain motherboards and will not work for most motherboards.

My game-oriented AMD Ryzen 9 5900X + X570 and Intel Core i9-10900K + Z490 systems couldn't accept the card because I couldn't force my PCIe x16 slot to x4x4x4x4 - I went for the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX ProcessorX and GIGABYTE X399 AORUS PRO motherboard.

PCIe lanes are not a problem with Threadripper ... which is a big advantage when you have all the CPU power, PCIe lanes and RAM available. You can run a ridiculous amount of hardware at the same time, but what's the use if you don't have PCIe lanes to run them on?

Chia plot + farm setup

You can Download the chia mining software right here.

After you've downloaded and installed it, you'll need to sign in. If you don't have an existing key, you won't be able to sign in. In this case, you want to create a new private key.

Create the new private key that will give you your 24 words for your wallet backup. DO NOT lose these because if you do you will never have access to your wallet. You should also remember the order of the words - so write them down in order or take a screenshot like I have it here.

Once you've set it up and running, start syncing. This can take a few hours to a few days. I had a few issues here, but that was due to my system and has nothing to do with chia mining. However, you don't have to be fully synced to start chia crypto mining.

They need a lot of CPU grunt

If you thought that chia coin mining was only tough on the memory side of your PC, think again - your CPU will be penalized just as much if you put it under the right load. I used an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX processor with 32 cores and 64 threads and was able to use 100% of the CPU without any problems.

It's kind of crazy.

Oh, and lots of super fast SSDs

When charging M.2 SSDs for your Chia crypto mining farm, you can't do better than Sabrent's SSD family - I wouldn't bother with Sabrent's PCIe 4.0-based Rocket 4 Plus SSDs, rather the PCIe 3.0 drives as they are cheaper.

You will be able to get more speed out of the drives, but several gigabytes per second are the order of the day at Sabrent - the company only knows one way: Step on the metal. There's nothing else for Sabrent, so their main engines are called Rocket ... well.

Don't forget about huge HDDs for long-term storage

If you are serious about chia mining and storage ... then have 10TB hard drives ready, stacks and stacks of them. You can store 91 standard chia blocks, with many chia farm owners having tons of huge mechanical hard drives for their chia farms.

You can use external HDDs or internal HDDs as well as SSDs if you want to spend the money on super-fast drives for your finished chia plots. I wouldn't do that as you need the super fast SSDs for plotting and then when you're done you can transfer the finished chia plots to the larger HDD for storage.

Final thoughts

Would I recommend that you configure your system and start chia mining on your SSD? No If you have the spare drives or the money to play around with and computers and crypto mining are your hobbies ... why the hell not? There are worse things that you can spend your money on.

I just wouldn't go out and spend thousands of dollars on SSDs and HDDs chia coin mining, you could let others convince you, but I'm not here to do that.

Sabrent was kind enough to send the 4 x 4 TB Rocket NVMe PCIe 3.0 M.2 SSDs so I thought I would have Chia Coin crypto mining done at the same time. This is one of the fastest ways to mine chia coins - but Sabrent always has something that is just around the corner and that is much faster ...

Yes, the Sabrent Plotripper SSD is the ultimate chia coin crypto mining SSD and is coming soon. I love the name of the drive, the Plotripper - it combines the worlds of the Chia plot and AMD's use of the Ryzen Threadripper name. Now, if you want the ultimate in chia coin mining, get as many of Sabrent's new Plotripper SSDs as possible.
