Crypto mining operation uncovered at Polish Police Headquarters
WARSAW - Polish police said Friday they uncovered a bitcoin mining operation at their own headquarters in Warsaw.
"A civilian employee, not a police officer ... tried to steal electricity to mine Bitcoin," police spokesman Mariusz Ciarka told TVN24 news channel.
"Unfortunately, this happened on a police compound," said Ciarka, emphasizing that the suspect never had access to police databases.
Ciarka added that the alleged crime was exposed "fairly quickly" but did not provide an exact timeline.
TVN24 said the employee had been fired and prosecutors had started an investigation.
According to the report, a second person will also be fired because of the investigation.
Crypto mining - the process by which computers mint new virtual currencies and validate transactions - requires enormous amounts of energy and computing power.
The process typically involves a large number of sophisticated computers forming a specially designed "rig" that performs the complex calculations required to maintain a cryptocurrency network.
Though energy hungry, the process can be lucrative with any Bitcoin currently valued at more than 32,600 euros ($ 38,800).
